Santos Mahogany Species Details   (Back)

Detailed information pertaining to Santos Mahogany (Myroxylon, balsamum) is detailed below:

Specie Names
Lumber Name(s): Santos Mahogany, cabreuva vermelha, red incensio, quina quina, estoraque, balsamo, nava.
Grown in: Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Panama, Guatemala, Mexico.
Santos Mahogany is a rich, dark mahogany-colored wood that is is extremely dense and stable. Its superior hardness and color fastness make it an excellent choice over genuine mahogany, which is too soft for most flooring uses.
Color Range and Color Change
Color Range: Santos Mahogany exhibits a medium range of color variation—between a light orangey/brown with yellowish overtones to a dark reddish/purplish brown. Most of the wood exhibits a medium to dark orange/brown mahogany tone.
Color Change: Santos Mahogany undergoes a slight degree of color change with a slight muting of the color range over time.
Where to Use
Santos Mahogany can be used both residentially and commercially wherever the distinguished look of mahogany is desired.
Special Characteristics and Issues
Site Sanding/ Finishing: All finishes seem to work on Santos. However, we have had some recent reports that Santos adversely affects the way the flattening agents in some oil-based satin finishes settle – leaving a blotchy finish. Also, in the summer, when ones open the packs of flooring, many times there will be spots of oil which have bled out of the flooring when it got heated. As far as we know, this oil has not adversely affected any oil- or water-based finish.
Allergic Reactions: Santos Mahogany is known as incensio or balsamo in many countries where it has been named for its strong scent when fresh cut. The scent quickly dissipates once it ages. This scent has been known to cause adverse respiratory reactions in some individuals when working with the dust of this wood so care should be taken.
